Some thoughts on Psalm 78:1-10

So, I was reading again a passage that we used on Shabbat in a study of ‘chametz’ (leaven) and the uses of ‘unleavened’ in the Tanakh as well as the new Testament.  Among others, we discussed a verse, Matthew 13:33, where Yeshua uses leavening as a positive image.  On re-reading, the next two verses caught my eye.

33 He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three [a]pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”

34 All these things Jesus Stormspoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“I will open My mouth in parables;
I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

Suddenly I was curious, as we should always be, when I noticed the Tanakh quote.  Where does that come from?

What is truth?

I have always loved eschatology, the study of end times prophecies.  While doing so about 15 years ago, I read an excellent book, worthy of your time, that had a fantastic quote in the introductory chapter.  The principle explained has been a guiding principle in all of my Bible study ever since.  Here is the extended quote followed by some thoughts…

Scripture Never Contradicts Scripture

Our responsibility as students of the Word is to make every attempt to understand what is written in its most natural, dogmanormal, customary sense, being careful to first look at all other passages that deal with whatever particular issue we are studying.  Remember-and this is critical-we have not found truth until we find the single common denominator that makes all of the passages fit together.  Psalm 119:160 teaches us that “the sum of Thy word is truth.”  In other words, you don’t have truth until you have processed all the passages dealing with a particular subject and found the single solution that accommodates them all without contradiction!

I often explain it this way.  Assume you have six passages dealing with a particular topic.  Using the face-value hermeneutic, passages 1, 3, and 5 say one thing, while passages 2, 4, and 6 appear, on the surface, to be saying something quite different.  Those who prefer what 1, 3, and 5 have to say conclude that the common denominator that pulls these three passages together is 15, and on 15 they will stand and give their life, if necessary, sweeping passages 2, 4, and 6 under the rug, so to speak.  On the other hand, those who prefer what passages 2, 4, and 6 have to say come to the common denominator of 12, and they, like their counterparts, are willing to die for their position, irrespective of what the three other passages might have to say on the issue at hand.

Which answer is right?  12 or 15?  Actually, neither is right!  If you want truth, you cannot ignore any of the passage that deal with the same issue, no matter how contradictory they may seem.  However, if you refuse to be sidetracked by the contradiction and keep looking for the resolution, you will eventually find that all passages fit perfectly into one common denominator: 60.  Now you have correlation without contradiction.  Now you have truth!

Until the common denominator is found, you don’t have anything except confusion.  Plain and simple.  Until then, you must simply admit  you don’t know.  That’s the best answer to give when you’re not sure!  Then you keep looking for that single solution that makes all the passages come together perfectly, without contradiction.

John 3:16 and works…

Today, I was having a conversation with good friend and occasional natsab author, Travis Hughey, when he shared something with me I had never noticed.  (Seems to be happening a lot latelty…  LOL!)

john3_16_taserThe context of his focus on these verses is the fact that in recent weeks he has been trying to see how many passages of Scripture he can find that demonstrate the connection between faith and works.  The compiled list is getting pretty extensive and interesting.

In our conversation about myriad other topics and passages, he said, ‘Oh, you gotta see this.  Turn to John 3:16!’

Trying to stay ahead of the curve, I rapidly scanned the passage for context using the new Hebraic lens the Father has been developing in me over the last two years.  And, as fast as Travis could read, I was calling out the key words.  Read this and see what you catch, then we can discuss…

The Camera and the Torah

To make ends meet, I supplement our family income by driving a school bus for the local public school system.  I finished training late last year and have a CDL B license with most SB iSM Screen Shot of the ‘bells and whistles’ and all of the extra responsibility.  For the last couple months I have been a regular substitute, but have recently inherited a route.

Typically, I am out of bed at 4:30 a.m. and in the lot warming up my bus by 5:25.  Roll at 5:43 so I can hit my first stop at 6:08.  Have them at school at 7:25 and park the bus back at the main terminal by 7:45.  The afternoon begins around 1:50 and I get home by 5 o’clockish.

My route is very specific with particular procedures at every single stop, particular timing parameters and safety actions.  Add the constant attention to students in establishing and maintaining discipline and safety for 50+ grade schoolers, and it is a recipe for myriad problems.

Over my head as well as midway back on the bus are cameras that capture audio and video.  They are connected to an on-board GPS connected computer that tracks Continue reading “The Camera and the Torah”

…the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart…

How many of us have memorized this verse?

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.   Psalm 19:14

Many of us.  In fact, I know many pastors who use this as part of their prayer before beginning a sermon.

Having memorized this verse, it lept out at me as I was doing part of my ‘Who is…’ series.  There is a clear declaration of Yahweh as the Redeemer, but what grabbed my attention even more was the reference.  This comes from Psalm 19!!!

Oh.  You don’t know why that is so important? Continue reading “…the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart…”

What does it mean to be ‘stiffnecked?’

Sometimes, I think the Father places thoughts in my head leading me on particular studies.  I will suddenly think of a term, word or concept and the Spirit will compel me to study it out.

One such thought that had the other day was, ‘what does it mean to be ‘stiff-necked?’  I immediately thought I had a pretty good idea, but the intent of the Spirit/Ruach was to read and confirm or alter my understanding.

Indeed, the study actually opened several neat doors that I will cover in the coming days.  All of it is intensely relevant for those who profess belief today!

Multiple passages confirmed what I thought I knew, but did so in a much clearer and precise way than I expected.  Continue reading “What does it mean to be ‘stiffnecked?’”

Evolution v. Intelligent Design and Shifting Paradigms

Recently, a friend in our fellowship loaned me a neat documentary titled, Unlocking the Mystery of Life.  The premise is a conversation with leading scientists who, as adherents to the Theory of Evolution, began to find alternate truth in their research.  Each relates parts of their journey from ‘evolutionist’ to a belief they collectively refer to as ‘intelligent design.’homersapien

The information presented in the video, as well as the excellent animation of molecular structures, etc, is fascinating, both as a general overview of the strong case for intelligent design and as an example of how new/deeper understanding can lead to a paradigm shift. Through the documentary we meet established, published and well respected scientists, some the world leaders in their field, who came to a point when they realized that the evidence they were seeing did not fit the evolutionary paradigm they were inculcated/indoctrinated with.  They had a choice… Continue reading “Evolution v. Brick v Stone as a Building Material

A couple of days ago, I was delivering some metalwork to a customer in the upstate of South Carolina.  While in the area, I called a good friend and brother, Jeff, to see if we could meet-up for lunch.  What a blessed time of fellowship, open Bibles in the restaurant and animated discussion of the Word!

During our conversation he began talking about the difference in building with bricks and stones as an illustration in the context of Exodus 20:24-25.  Let’s read,

24 You shall make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you. 25 If you make an altar of stone for Me, you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your tool on it, you will profane it.

I could immediately identify with his illustration as I had written a related article almost a year ago.  His angle was slightly different, but the points are inextricably connected. Continue reading “Brick v Stone as a Building Material”

Chewing gum for the brain…

As I have mentioned before, I am reading/enjoying/re-reading J. K. McKee’s The New Testament Validates Torah.  Frankly, this is the single best systematic addressing of Torah for the Messianic.  I believe more and broader scholarly works will emerge as time passes, but it will be hard to top this 400+ page work!  EVERY Messianic believer needs this on their shelf, and any pastor wanting to understand or get a comprehensive look needs to read this book.

Advertisement aside, there are so many terrific quotes on every page.  I want to share three from pages 91-93.  The first two are cites of other authors and the last is his.

Take the time to read and ponder each!  I’ll list the original sources from McKee’s footnotes.

What would we think of a presidential candidate who assured his voters that he would only UPHOLD the requirements and FULFILL the goals of the Constitution and never ABOLISH our country’s customs and laws, yet two years after his election, plunged the country into complete anarchy?  Would this be FULFILLMENT of the Constitution of ABOLITION of the Constitution? Blessed is the man…

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
But his delight is in the Torah of the Lord,
And in His Torah he meditates day and night.
He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.  Psalm 1:1-3
