Ephraim’s Shifting Paradigm by Ken Rank

Good friend and fellow sojourner, Ken Rank of United2Restore, has written a terrific article that sums up a lot of history and the quandary that Christendom is in as they try to reach the Jews.  But maybe, just maybe, we’ve been looking at this all wrong because we have used the wrong lens (paradigm) to understand Scripture.

This is a terrific read that is well worth your time and may challenge your thought process in several important ways!  Enjoy!

Ephraim’s Shifting Paradigm

Most historians believe that a good solid understanding of history is the best guide in terms of understanding the future. History often stands as a beacon of things to come because humanity has not always prodigal sonexcelled at not repeating its mistakes. And so it has been between Christian/Jewish relations for the last 2000 years. Where these two peoples should stand more united against their common foes, they remain at odds usually over poor conclusions, bad definitions, and false assumptions. This has been a two –sided coin in terms of fault, but it also might be safe to say that the coin lands on one side more often than the other. Though the Christian means well, his evangelical paradigm brings with it a line in the sand which he uses to determine who he can and can’t call brother. Couple this with the fact that most Christians tend to live out of the “New Testament” (NT) and don’t study the Tanach or “Old Testament” (OT) as much, it then becomes easier to understand why these two people who have far more in common than they realize seem to stand at odds with each other more often than not.

Whether Christians realize it or not, Christianity began as a sect of Judaism.[1] There was a Jewish rabbi, a teacher, whose name was Yehoshua[2] (Yeshua being the short form, commonly known today as Jesus) and he had many followers. He taught from the Torah (the law, God’s instructions), and he was believed to have walked out the contents of the Torah to perfection, as intended by the author. The book of Acts declares that as many as 20,000 or more Jews believed that Yeshua was messiah[3] and, though this may come as a surprise to some, many people now believe that the Jews were not necessarily his main target audience. While his message and work would appear to apply to all, the weight of his message was aimed specifically at the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel.[4] What has been widely misunderstood for a very long time is just who the lost sheep of the House of Israel are.

Bridges to Ba’al: How Satan Uses the Canaanite Influenced Christmas and Easter to Ensnare the Children of the Household

Following is part one of a series that friend Peter Vest is writing.  These are not easy words to hear, but much needed if we are to truly seek truth.

Bridges to Ba’al: How Satan Uses the Canaanite Influenced Christmas and Easter to Ensnare the Children of the Household

The beautiful tree, bedecked with christmas decorationssilver and gold, warm glowing lights, beside a roaring hearth, a host of shiny presents–what’s not to like?  Christmas is beloved especially by children because of all of the beautiful traditions, the celebration of family, the feeling of security with the hearth with the promise of food nearby (“visions of sugar plums”) and especially the presents!

And since, as Christians believe, the day of Christmas has been devoted to the G-d of Israel (i.e. Yeshua) then Christmas is all the more special, right?

No.  Here’s why:

Allow me to briefly connect several dots showing the evolution of the Canaanite religion, it’s overt beginnings with child sacrifice to the fire gods Ba’al and Asherah, to the fire gods Jupiter and Vesta, to the modern vestigial remains as observed in certain customs of Christmas and Easter.

Thanks to modern discoveries of Ugarit texts, Ugarit being one of the ancient city-states of Canaan, we now know a little bit about some of the major players in the Canaan pantheon:

Asherah, was the fertility goddess, the “Queen of Heaven” (now immortalized with fertility symbols on Easter), married to El, a senile god who was eventually replaced with Ba’al.  The people believed that Asherah was best appeased with sexual rites, often symbolized with a pole (the “May pole” being a modern vestige of this phenomenon) and that Ba’al was best appeased with a fire and a “green” tree.

A question that needs your attention….

Does your pastor uphold the Torah?  Does he teach the difference in the clean and unclean?  Does he keep/teach seventh day Sabbath?  If not, he falls in the same category as the priests who are judged for profaning YHVH.

Beware walking in the traditions of men and listening to smooth justifications that are contrary to clear Scripture.  I love you and tell you that you are accountable.

Shofar Making Workshop on December 25th

Hey guys, a few have expressed interest in participating in the shofar making workshop I previously announced.  For those who care to join us, you need to order a kudu horn in the next few days so you’ll have it before the workshop.  Ebay is one source, though I have had good experience with Atlantic Coral Enterprise.  (Many of the ebay listings in the above link are actually Atlantic Corals’ nicer/bigger horns…)  Get the longest horn you can afford.  Just read the fine print as some will say, ‘yadda, yadda, pinholes, not suitable for shofar…’

screenshot-www ebay com 2015-12-12 23-14-26Those who are not making a shofar are welcome to come just hang out…  We plan to start the day around 10 a.m.    Bring a covered dish and we’ll break for lunch around 1…  Fire pit, music, fun, fellowship, etc.  Likely we’ll have an Erev Shabbat gathering and weather dependent, dancing under the pecans…  Who knows??

Those who plan to be here, please drop me an email so we have a rough idea what to expect/prepare for. And, BYOH…  bring your own horn…  😉

Email from Ephraim and Rimona Frank

Here is an excellent email I received from Ephraim and Rimona Frank.  It was a blast to their distribution list, so some may have seen it…

Shalom Fellow Israelite,

The other day I had to go and buy myself a new study bible, as the old one was falling apart.   Upon arriving home and opening it, I started reading a text that caught my eye.  At first I didn’t know where this excerpt was from but the following is what captured my thoughts:  Pause and wonder! Blind yourselves and be blind! They are drunk, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with intoxicating drink.  For YHVH has poured out on you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes, namely, the prophets; And He has covered your heads, namely, the seers.  The whole vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is literate, saying, ‘Read this, please.’ And he says, ‘I cannot, for it is sealed.’  Then the book is delivered to one who is illiterate, saying, ‘Read this, please.’ And he says, ‘I am not literate.’ Therefore YHVH said: ‘Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but have removed their hearts far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men. Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous work among this people, a marvelous work and a wonder; For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden’” (Isaiah 29:9-14).

SC National Shabbat: My Thoughts

Sunday and Monday I was just plain exhausted and it was very hard to think about our National Shabbat gathering, never mind begin to process and share some thoughts…  While I am still recovering (12+ hour work days make restful Shabbats that much more precious), I am beginning to put together some thoughts that may prove valuable.  The following are in no particular order and may be a bit random, but I want to share some lessons, ideas, thanks, etc.

wp-1449372586016.jpegI was overwhelmed by the response and am confident that Abba’s people, and particularly the Messianic community are prepared and yearning for fellowship of the kind we experienced December 5th at the SC National Shabbat.  Clearly, it is more than just me or a few of us who desire to begin building bridges and coming out of our corners to be echad (unified, but not necessarily uniform). As a guesstimate, there were about 225 people there, but most everyone I spoke with knew of others who wanted to attend but for one reason or another were not able.  Essentially, the numbers could have easily been doubled.  What a glorious turnout with all praise and thanks go to our King!

In the weeks leading up to the day, we all prayed a good bit for beautiful weather.  When searching for a host site, Abba led us to Ron Cowart’s campground Continue reading “SC National Shabbat: My Thoughts”

Some thoughts from Joseph….

My longtime readers know that the Joseph portions are my favorite.  Two years ago, I wrote a number of detailed posts considering the life of Joseph as a prophecy of Yeshua.  Those three parts are here, here and here.  Very important!

Later I added, Jesus said, “Walk like an Egyptian!”, kind of an odd twist.

Each time I have studied the Joseph portions, I have considered Joseph and not so much the characters around him.  This time I am trying to shift my focus and see the past him to understand other bits….

Today I have two interesting, but yet unexplored thoughts to share.

  • Gen. 37:2.  Joseph’s bad report was of Bilhah and Zilpah’s sons, not Leah’s as I had previously understood….  Interesting.  How does that change my thoughts on Reuben?  Hmmmm.  And, why the sons of the concubines and not Leah?  There is a reason, but why?
  • Gen. 38 seems an odd interjection in the prophetic image Joseph projects, unless this story, too, is prophetic of Judah during the last 2000 years.  I really need to ponder this one, but on initial examination it appears to have legs.  This is a delicate matter to explore as we must consider the history of Judah apart from Joseph/Yeshua, but it may be a worthy endeavor.

More as I have time to ponder.

Thoughts?  Ideas?  Comments?

Are YOU ready to pass the Smell test?

Recently, a Jewish young man had a near death experience during which he reports seeing and learning many things.  I’ll find a link to the extended interview to post below, but here is a neat short clip used by Ahavat Ammi to make the point that the Messiah will judge by smell…  a concept largely foreign to Christendom.

Watch this 3 minute clip, then check out the below linked article from a couple years ago that explains how this is a very real possibility in how the Messiah judges people.  Very interesting.

It is fascinating to see from the long version of this young man’s interview that he has literally no Scriptural background, yet he accurately portrays the two witnesses, the Mount splitting in two, the Mashiach being recognized by all, Him being sinless, etc, etc….

More interestingly, he says the Mashiach judges Continue reading “Are YOU ready to pass the Smell test?”

And, another zinger…

Funny, several friends have sent me some pretty pithy images in the last day or so…  Yesterday, I put up a ZINGer.   Here’s one from Julian Hamilton, a member of our home fellowship group.

The challenge to each of us is, do we prefer unchallenged comfort that may not be true, or pursuing challenging truth, even if it makes us uncomfortable?

Me?  I much prefer the latter.  How about you?
