We have laying hens and the standby, ‘yolk’s on you…’ joke never gets old.
Well, the ‘yoke’ indeed is on you!!
How often I have heard ‘yoke of the Law….’ And Acts 15:10 gets quoted.
Well, this evening I saw something that was very interesting.
I’ve been pondering Jeremiah 6:16-19.
Thus says the Lord,“Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ 17 “And I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not listen.’ 18 “Therefore hear, O nations, And know, O congregation, what is among them. 19 “Hear, O earth: behold, I am bringing disaster on this people, The fruit of their plans, Because they have not listened to My words, And as for My law, they have rejected it also.
I had been pondering this passage focusing on verse 16 and 19.
“… Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls………Because they have not listened to My words, And as for My law, they have rejected it also.“
This passage identifies the Torah as ‘the good way’ and ‘the ancient paths.’
But, tonight, the phrase ‘and you will find rest for your souls’ caught my eye. Yes, I had already considered the fact that both the Tanach AND the New Testament say that the Torah is NOT burdensome, but I am not the brightest bulb in the pack! Look at what hit me tonight:
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Yeshua in Matthew 11:28-30
DUH!!! Yeshua is pointing directly to Jeremiah 6:16 and calling the people back to the ancient paths, the good way, the Torah!! He is saying, “MY yoke IS Torah, and it is easy and light compared to the yoke of the Pharisees/religious leaders!!” (Check any chain reference Bible and it likely points out this exact connection.)
Sorry, you probably saw that the first time, but I’m still having a kadosh cow moment!!
Now, back to Acts 15.
Peter in Acts 15:10 says, “Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?” Everybody wants to force the ‘yoke’ phrase to mean ‘Torah’ or the Law of Moses, but they ignore Peter’s agreeing to James’ judgment that the Gentiles will:
- learn Moses (Torah)
- in the synagogue
- on the Sabbath.
Without getting off on the rabbit trail of the easily refuted incorrect understanding of the ‘yoke of the Pharisees’ in Acts 15, it is cool to see that indeed, Torah IS a yoke!
Yep, I said it.
Torah is a yoke. His yoke. The yoke Yeshua speaks of, when He says, ‘My yoke is easy’ is the yoke of Torah.
We ALL wear a yoke. We wear the yoke of the Pharisees, the religious teachers, the false systems of men, OR we wear the yoke of Torah.
Multiple times we are told that the Commandments are NOT burdensome, but sadly, as the prophet Jeremiah tells us, the people refuse to listen and refuse to walk in it. ”
‘But they said, “we will not walk”… but they said, “we will not listen.”‘
Indeed, the ‘yoke’s on you.’ Which is it? HIS yoke, or the yoke of the modern pharisees, the teachers of traditions of men?
I pray you enter into HIS rest.
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Real Shalom comes when you put on HIS yoke and walk as He walked.
As a side note, I realized tonight that Jeremiah 6 has multiple markers for our day. This is not a message to some past generation. It is eschatological. It is to us, right now, today.

CONFIRMED!! Here is another confirmation that Yeshua is calling us to Torah:
“My burden is light.” The Greek word for ‘burden’ used here is ‘phortion’ (G5413), the same word He uses in Matthew 23:4 while commanding obedience to ‘all they say from the seat of Moses’ and then dressing the Pharisees down for laying burdens of **THEIR TRADITIONS** on people.
See for yourself: “Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2 saying: ‘The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses (the seat from which Torah, and Torah ONLY was read); 3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. 4 They tie up heavy BURDENS (traditions of men) and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger. … ‘” (Matthew 23:1-4ff) See also, Luke 11:46.
Amein!!! This is so tov!!! Why can’t we all understand this.
I especially love this one. Jer 6:16-19 was the very verse my husband and I prayed continually 5 years ago when coming into Hebraic understanding. And then reading Matt 11:28-30 to my husband last week, we both were astonished– we never realized Yeshua quoted this very verse in Jer 6! It is so exciting to go back and forth from the front of the Scriptures to the back of the Scriptures- the back says what the front says!
Thanks for all you hard work Pete.
I remember the first time I understood this particular find and being stunned! I, too, love Jer. 6:16-19… but sad verses, too as I have family who refuse to understand and see.. Stiffnecked just like our fathers!
