During a recent conversation, someone opined to me that the man is his wife’s helpmeet. I was a bit shocked and had to respond to this thought.
In years past, I might have agreed out of ignorance, however I know the Scriptures much better now. Let’s review a couple verses and understand this ‘helpmeet thing’ a little bit more.
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper [helpmeet] suitable for him.”
Genesis 2:18
In Creation, the mandate given to Adam was to ‘be fruitful and multiple’ and ‘have dominion.’ Eve was not yet in the picture.
As we have discussed before, there is a defined authority structure from Creation until at least the end of the Millennium. In that authority structure, man is responsible for woman, not to woman.
Paul says,
…for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake.
1 Corinthians 11:9
She was created FOR him, not him for her.
This is not to say that man isn’t responsible to care for, love, protect, provide for, etc the woman. He most certainly has responsibilities, but there is nothing equal or egalitarian about their relationship. She helps him in the mission or ministry God has given him. Not the other way around.
Western cultural feminism has inverted or tried to invert God’s order.
The restoration of kol Israel and walking the truth of Scripture demands that we understand authority and headship and then walk it out in a manner that images Messiah and the qahal (Eph. 5:22-33) and is pleasing to the King
