Deuteronomy 30 is an amazing chapter.
I won’t even dig into the first four verses that promise Yahweh will restore His people to the land and have compassion on us when we return to Him and obey His commandments…. I’ll save that post for later.
I won’t drone on about how He promises to prosper abundantly in body, offspring, produce etc, (vss. 8-10) those who keep His commandments and statutes…. That’ll make another good post in the future.
I won’t bother to show verses 15 and 16 that speak of the life and prosperity given for keeping all of His commandments… Just too much good stuff in this chapter.
Instead, I want to introduce you to the two witnesses mentioned in verse 19. No, these aren’t the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11, but these are two witnesses that Jeremiah and Yeshua both point to!
Let’s see them:
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,
Moshe has just listed the curses and the blessings for keeping Torah. He insures that they understand that the covenant is not just with them, but with future generations (Deu. 29:14-15). Then he prophesies that in-spite of the curses, they would turn away and one day we would call the blessings and curses to mind and turn again to the covenant and again seek to walk in the ways of Yahweh.
Now, at the end of chapter 30 he calls two witnesses against them that the Torah has been set in place and they have entered covenant. Heaven and earth.
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Heaven and earth. Two witnesses to the endurance and unchanging Torah. Witnesses to the blessings that follow obedience.
Some might counter with ‘New Covenant‘… so let’s go look at what that says….
“Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
35 Thus says the Lord,
Who gives the sun for light by day
And the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,Who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar;
The Lord of hosts is His name:
36 “If this fixed order departs
From before Me,” declares the Lord,
“Then the offspring of Israel also will cease
From being a nation before Me forever.”37 Thus says the Lord,
“If the heavens above can be measured
And the foundations of the earth searched out below,
Then I will also cast off all the offspring of Israel
For all that they have done,” declares the Lord.
Two witnesses, heaven and earth, to the New Covenant, as well….
So what is the ‘New Covenant’ that these two witnesses still testify to?
Torah. Written on our hearts.
Seriously, this is what Yeshua was pointing to when He said, “…not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”
Notice in the New Covenant:
- “I will…” Future tense.
- “..with the House of Israel and the House of Judah.” Where do you fit? Grafted in?
- “I will put my Torah within them…” Torah is what will be written on your heart.
- “They will not teach again, each his neighbor and each man his brother saying, ‘Know Yahweh,’ for they will all know me…” Hmmm. Looks like this is not yet fulfilled. That must mean the covenant is not yet in force… Compare to Hebrew 8 to confirm it is an exact quote from Jeremiah.
Now, look out the window. I’ll wait.
Heaven and earth still there?
Yep?
So is the Torah.
Got Torah?
Just found this link! Heaven and Earth and the Law of God. (Haven’t watched it, but I bet it says what I just said… Odds?)
