Seudat Moshiach!! (Feast of the Messiah)

The eighth day of Passover (Unleavened) is often celebrated with a big feast called Seudat Moshiach.  The Feast of the Messiah was instituted by Rabbi Yisroel ben Eliezer, better known as Baal Shem Tov, in the 18th century.  His purpose was to establish a feast that made tangible the reality of the coming Moshiach with lively Scriptural discussion, food, nigunim, celebration and four cups of wine.

Rabbi Amichaye Even-Israel, son of the eminent scholar and author Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, told Breaking Israel News, “The main goal of Seudat Mashiach is to try and internalize the issue of the coming of the Mashiach (Messiah) as a ‘real’ issue and not as a myth or a fairy tale. This is why we eat and drink while discussing this issue – to symbolize that it is real and could be ‘digested’”.

Texts such as Isaiah 11, Ezekiel 37:15ff, Isaiah 60-62, Zechariah 14, among others are passages that are discussed along with eating, singing, dancing and generally rejoicing in Moshiach!

I searched for ‘Seudat Moshiach’ and could not find a Seder to get some ideas from, but did find a number of announcements for synagogue and Messianic celebrations in the coming days.  Chabad Chayil in North Miami Beach has this pretty announcement, similar to the Chabad Lubavitch of Edmonton.

Beth Shechinah, a Messianic fellowship had this informative pdf that shares some thoughts and ideas.  Previously quoted, this article in Breaking Israel News is particularly informative.  A dead link frustrated me a little at collive because it was embedded in an article about Seoda Moshiach with the promise of a Seder…  but, alas.  (If a reader finds a downloadable seder, I would love to read it…  Please add a link in the comments section.)

While this is very much a traditional feast, not commanded in Scripture, the timing at the end of Pesach as well as bookending the ‘Feast of Moshe’ on the first night seems so logical and a good excuse to gather and celebrate the Anointed One!  We will have a few friends over on Friday evening for Erev Shabbat and Seudat Moshiach!  Singing, dancing, discussion and celebration will be the order of the day.  May you, wherever you are, join in and celebrate the coming Prince with us!!

    1. Because of the Hebrew text in the browser link, it appears that it didn’t transmit well. Perhaps do a search for “Hagadah Shel Seudat Mashiach Messiah’s Feast Hagadah Designed by Sean Emslie – Pesach 2000/Nisan 5760 …” It appeared to be a full-length hagadah for Seudat Mashiach on the Academia.edu website.
